Barry John was a superstar just before I was old enough the watch the rugby 5 Nations. But he was still talked about in revered tones by fans of every country. Watching old videos of his genius I can see why. Rest in peace.

First rugby player I remember as a wee boy, watching Grandstand on a Saturday afternoon when Celtic weren’t at home, hoping Wales win because of him.. The jewel in the great Wales rugby team of the early 70s Crown. A legend who transcended sports. RIP.

They used to say that you could find a stand off in every pit in Wales
Then Barry John came along and made generations of world class stand offs.
He actually stopped playing when a fan or fans allegedly bowed in deference to him as they would a King.
All I know he was poetry in Motion the nearest I’ve seen since him Dan Carter of the All Blacks.
RIP Son you’ve earned a rightful place in Rugby History.

Saw the great Welsh rugby team beat Canada decades ago, what a team they had
I remember an interview by the BBC after a Wales v England game, when England were hyped before the game, as if they were going to beat the Welsh soundly
BBC reporter: So when you looked across at the England team standing before you...what did you think ?"
Welsh Captain, in his thick Welsh accent: "Well, their strips looked nice..."
