I'm trying to find a few crumbs of comfort from that mighty helping of humble pie we've had to swallow.
The fact is, that on that performance, we are nowhere near Champions League standard and we would have to endure one or two (probably three) almighty wallopings in the the group stages (and that's even allowing for getting past Slavia Prague).
The only real benefits to the club would be the bumper paycheque, the one decent home performance, the extra bit of experience, and the opportunity to see some quality opposition.
It doesn't ease the pain, but now is the time for everyone (and I do mean everyone, Peter, Neil, Dermot) to reflect on what has happened and develop a strategy and plan that will safeguard our domestic dominance and at least prepare adequately for high-stakes European football.
I have as many questions as I do answers, but the board have run out of excuses for now. They DO have my support, but it is finite and failure to reinforce and strengthen the team would be a dereliction of their duties and responsibility to every Celtic fan who has invested their hard-earned into following the Club.
We have had ample opportunity to put the lights out on the zombified horde in the Southside, but we keep giving them glimmers of hope with our unwillingness to sufficiently invest in key areas of the team. We have lost one of our best talents and perhaps that young man was lured by the bright lights and big bucks, or perhaps he saw the graffiti on the wall. Either way, it's time for those entrusted with running the club to dig deep and give something back to the support.
There are no excuses now that we don't have pesky Champions League nights to contend with. Nothing less than a convincing title win will suffice and at least three top-quality players have to be acquired to highlight our ambitions and intentions.
We are not naive enough to believe we would win the Champions League, but neither are we gullible enough to think that everything is sunshine and roses either.
